At Chimney Direct we carry chimney cleaning rods and brushes that will get the job done in any situation and we can help with it. We have different cleaning tools that make any cleaning job easier and more efficient. For those needing chimney cleaning equipment for cleaning round metal chimneys from the bottom, we have the proflex chimney rods and the sweeps all chimney brushes, which come in a variety of sizes. These brushes and rods are flexible so they can be bent and pushed through small openings where traditional brushes and rods cannot.

Many of our customers ask us if they can clean the chimney from the bottom and avoid going up on the roof or ladder. For fireplaces, if the damper bisects the bottom of the chimney in half the proflex rods and sweeps all brushes can be used. The SweepsAll brushes are soft and oversized so they can be pushed past the damper and will then pop back open to clean the flue.

When selecting a chimney rod you need to know how much strength or flexiblity is needed and if the chimney cleaning will be done from the top of the chimney or from inside the house. The 3/8" Pro-Sweep rods are our most popular due to the medium flexiblity, ease of use and value. As far as quality, the 1/4 " homeowner grade brushes and rods are the lower cost alternative to the 3/8" professional grade which is stronger and will last longer. The homeowner grade will get the job done but the professional grade will clean easier and quicker. If the chimney cleaning needs to be done from the bottom of the chimney and flexibility for turns is required, the Proflex rods are the right choice. For jobs that require extra strength and no flexibility the heavy-duty pro rods should be used.

How often your chimney needs to be cleaned depends on several factors. The type and quality of wood burned, how often it is being used and if it is a fireplace or woodstove. The combination of these factors determine the amount ot leftover carbon molecules from the wood that failed to get burned and rise up on the hot air in the chimney. Some make it out of the chimney, while others don't and stick to the interior of the chimney on their way up. How much of it determines the amount of build-up of creosote and effort to remove it.

To remove this buildup correctly, cleanly, and safely, simply do the following:

  • Using a strong spotlight, look up or down the flue to determine the level of creosote in the chimney. If it is a dusty, soft and grayish/black buildup it can be easily removed with the proper sized chimney brush. On the other hand, if it is hard, black and shiny, it will be more difficult to remove and will require our prokleen chain system or a special spray-on powder that helps turn the tough black glaze to a more brittle state. It can then be removed with one of our flat wire heavy duty brushes.
  • The flue/chimney should be cleaned with either a metal or plastic brush. Orange clay flue tiles need to be cleaned with a wire brush, while round metal flues should be cleaned with a plastic brush to avoid scraping the metal surface. Obviously, before cleaning any chimney, make sure the opening into the house is closed and use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to suck up the soot. We carry a specialized fireplace cover and ash vac under our accessory section.

Chimney cleaning is fairly simple. You attach a series of rods to the brush to lengthen it as you proceed up or down the chimney. Cleaning is best accomplished with short, forceful, plunging motions, which will allow the brush to do its job. When performing the cleaning from the interior of the house, we suggest our hearth country ash vacuum to help control the dust. When cleaning from the top, the bottom can be sealed up during the cleaning. If you have any questions call us toll free at 800-260-8075.

Chimney brushes for every size, shape and situation

You might be asking yourself.. how do I know which type of chimney brush I need ? First, are you trying to clean a rectangle ,round, square opening or does your chimney have multiple bends that will need flexible rods to go through or maybe you want heavy duty rods and brushes for large flue sizes.

When selecting a chimney brush you need to determine if the chimney is metal or cement. If it is a metal pipe chimney, a poly brush that matches the inside diameter of the pipe should be used. Cement chimneys require the wire brushes and should also match the inside diameter of the flue to be cleaned. As far as quality, the 1/4 " homeowner grade brushes and rods are the lower cost alternative to the 3/8" professional grade which is stronger and will last longer. The homeowner grade will get the job done but the professional grade will clean easier and quicker.

Our Poly chimney cleaning brush is available in many sizes, ranging from a 5 inch to a 12 inch round chimney brush. Each chimney brush is manufactured in two different thread sizes: 1/4 inch for the homeowner grade, and 3/8 inch for the professional grade chimney brush. Four foot long chimney rods on which to attach the chimney brush can also be ordered from us, either separately or in a kit. The number of chimney brush rods that will be needed will be based on the length of the chimney. Five foot professional grade chimney brush rods are another option we offer.

Poly and Wire Chimney Brushes and Chimney Cleaning Kits

Poly brushes are great for customers looking to clean metal Wire brushes are used for cleaning masonry or flue tile chimneys and our most popular are our chimney cleaning kits. These kits come with a choice of flexible rods are stronger heavy duty rods.

All of these chimney brushes are designed to not scratch the metal surface of the chimney.

Masonry Chimney Cleaning

Our wire chimney brushes should be used to clean all masonry or flue tile applications and can be used from the bottom with our proflex rods or with our heavy duty rods for cleaning the chimney from the top and in our opinion is the best way to remove large and stubborn deposits of creosote. Also, these rods give you more power for moving the brushe back and forth.

All ot these brushes and rods are simply attached together to handle any length of chimney. They can be used from the top or bottom of the chimney with our choice of flexible or heavy duty rods.

We have kits that can be used from the outside or top of the chimney and kits that can be used for the inside or bottom of the chimney.

The outside kits include stronger less flexible rods and a choice of any size brushe to meet the customers needs.

The inside kits are available for cleaning chimneys from the bottom and include the proflex chimney rods for flexiblity and they can also be used on masonry square and rectangle flues with the available adaptor. Feel free to call with any questions.

Chimney Cleaning Supplies

Our chimney hand brushes come in many different shapes and sizes and each serves its own purpose. The curved handle wire brush comes with our kits and is a great chimney brush for cleaning in between tight spaces and has strong wire bristles. The scout chimney brush is a great chimney brush for cleaning around the damper and bottom of the flue and has durable poly bristles. The smoke chamber chimney brush is a longer chimney brush for cleaning a couple of feet up into the chimney and has durable poly bristles. The unique noodle chimney brush can be bent to reach into hard to reach places and the milbury brush is an all purpose brush for sweeping up ashes.

We also carry the ProKleen Rotary Chimney Cleaning System and should be used when normal chimney cleaning is not enough and the chimney is coated with an extreme case of hard creosote. The system is easy to use..the 1 foot starter rod is attached to your own drill and than 5 foot rods are added on for the length required and the glaze removal chains spin around in the flue "chipping" off the stubborn glaze, returning your chimney to safe condition.

Another product that we offer is the Wohler Viper Chimney Cleaning System and can be used when standard chimney cleaning brushes and rods are too stiff and the chimney needs to be cleaned from the bottom, has multiple bends or difficult access points. The system is easy to use..the cable is snaked up the chimney as it unwrapped off the holder and spins the brush around providing the cleaning action. Poly and wire brushes are available for different size chimneys.

Our other chimney brushes and cleaning supplies include our popular hearth counry ash vac and fireplace cover to help control dust and make the chimney cleaning as clean as possible.
